Putting £1 Lipsticks to the Test!

I’ve been so excited about writing a new lipstick post!! You can read my others here, here and here!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, lipstick is my not-so-guilty obsession and if I’m honest I’m a little bit of a lipstick snob. The majority of the lipsticks I own are MAC and I never tend to really venture much further.

However, recently I did have a little wander over to the MUA stand in my local Superdrug and even a lipstick snob like me can’t turn their nose up at a stand full of £1 lipsticks. ONE POUND! That’s fifteen lipsticks for the price of one MAC!

Now, half of me wanted to buy the lot, who cares if they’re rubbish?! They’re ONE POUND, practically pennies!! And the other half was extremely skeptical, surely they’re absolutely terrible? They can’t possibly come even close to high end products, why else would they be so cheap? You get what you pay for… right?

So I met myself in the middle and picked up four satin finish lipsticks (the only finish I could find) and one £3 MUA Liquid Lipstick and here’s my totally honest verdict!

❤ Shade 7

This shade was the most disappointing for me (if you can possibly be disappointed at something that cost you one pound!). It was very much like a lip balm with little to no pigmentation. Although, there was a silver lining, because the lipstick are of a satin finish they’re all very glossy without being sticky and therefore perfect to just pop on your lips in the colder months to keep your lips hydrated.

❤ Shade 2

This lipstick looked very different once applied, I was expecting a quite subtle plum shade perfect for Autumn however it was much more of a bright, almost comical purple, a little too pigmented. Although I wouldn’t wear this day to day I’m definately going to be keeping this shade out in time for Halloween as it’s the perfect bright purple to wear with your costume and has a little shimmer to it in the light.

❤ Shade 11

Now this one I WILL be wearing day to day. As you may know from reading my other lipstick posts I love my nude lippys, however I always tend to reach for matte nudes before any other finish. I loved the way the nude looked being glossy and found this to be the perfect ‘my lips but better’ shade. It would be the perfect colour to pop on your lips for school or work if you’re not wanting your lipstick to be too noticable but you do wanna have a little colour!

I ummed and ahhed over this one for ages in Superdrug, it was one of those, ‘I know I’m gonna hate it… but what if I don’t?’ moments. And I am SO bloody glad I talked myself in to it! I’ve always wanted to try a red lip but been too scared as I’m so pale I thought I’d end up looking like Snow White. But this one was gorgeous, again I think it may be due to how glossy the finish was making it not so bold and daunting. How perfect is it for Autumn please?!… And if I conquer my red lipstick phobia this year then maybe a matte red will be on the agenda next year! Who knows 😀

❤ MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer – Firecracker

If I’m completely honest I didn’t expect much from this product… and I didn’t get much. It was a lot darker on my lips than on the bottle and the swatch and dried very uneven and patchy. It was however EXTREMELY matte, almost too matte making it a nightmare to get off 😥 It looked better in photos than in real life trust me!!

…It didn’t look too pretty when I was scrubbing it off my hand and lips almost ten minutes later either 😦

So… all in all I’m actually quite impressed. If we ignore the liquid lipstick *shudder* none of the others were particularly terrible and the ones that were good were super good!

I’m by no means telling you to rid yourself of your MAC addiction and swear by the likes of £1 MUA lippys… however this has definately opened my eyes to what other lipsticks high street brands have to offer, even if they are a liiiiitttle pricier than a quid. And I look forward to rocking a red lip in the near future!

Thanks for reading and don’t forget you can find me on TwitterInstagram and Facebook and pleaseeee leave your links before so I can follow back!
